If you are a fan of movies like I am, you should get a good laugh when you see the product listing that O'Reilly Auto Parts added to their website as an Easter Egg.

It turns out the listing was never posted for marketing purposes but as a way to ensure their database was being updated properly.

This Easter Egg Product Listing Is Really Smart On Their Behalf For a Variety of Reasons

What's cool about this small, simple, funny product listing is that there are random people all over the country (and potentially the world) happily sharing this same thing on their social media profiles because they want to share what they've found with others.

It Is a Great Example of Viral Marketing – Even If They Didn't Do It On Purpose

O'Reilly spokesman Mark Merz said the listing has been around since the early 2000's but every couple of years on the Internet rediscovers it, finds it amusing and shares it on social media.  Every time this listing resurges they get tens of thousands of visitors to their site!

While I doubt people are immediately going to their website and purchasing auto parts because of this Easter Egg product listing, there are a variety of benefits to having people routinely Google your business name and spend time visiting your website.

  • Improves SEO – It can boosts their SEO (Search Engine Optimization) results.
  • Grows Name Recognition – It grows their name recognition
  • Creates Affinity – It creates affinity to their brand
  • Builds Remarketing Lists – I think it is genius because it helps build their retargeting audience (useful for Google and Facebook remarketing).  When people visit their website they can now be targeted with Google Ads and Facebook Ads and those can lead to an eventual purchase.

While you unfortunately can't buy an actual Flux Capacitor from O'Reilly Parts you can get a good laugh from their listing.  Perhaps you should consider hiding an Easter Egg into your website as well?
